A Photoroom alternative for when removing the background isn’t the problem.
Photoroom is very good at what it does. This page is about the point where what it does stops being what you need — and it is honest about where that point isn’t.
For people who already cut out their products cleanly and still don’t have a photo worth listing.| Photoroom | Phoxel | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | An editor — background removal, retouch, templates, batch export | A generator — a set of finished scenes from a few reference photos |
| How you pay | Subscription; allowances reset every month | One-time credit packs; credits never expire |
| Monthly caps | Two separate meters — AI credits and an export cap, both per month | None. You have credits or you don’t |
| Mobile app | Yes, and it is the main way people use it | No — browser only |
| One image in five seconds | Yes | No, generation takes minutes |
| Subjects covered | Products | Products, food, pets, vehicles, jewelry, clothing, interiors, exteriors, logos |
| People in shots | AI fashion models included | Never — no people generated at all |
Photoroom’s paid tiers publish two monthly limits side by side: AI credits (up to 8,000, 25,000 and 75,000 a month on Pro, Max and Ultra) and separate export caps (1,000, 3,000 and 10,000 a month). Prices move and vary by region, so we don’t reprint them — check their pricing page. Checked 2 August 2026.
Which one is right for you?
Use Photoroom
You need one cutout, now, on your phone.
A background removed in five seconds in a mobile app is a genuinely different product from anything that generates. For that job Photoroom wins and it isn’t close.
You process hundreds of images a month.
Batch export and templates are built for catalogue volume on a repeating schedule. Our credits are bought in packs, which suits bursts rather than a monthly conveyor.
You want brand templates and a kit.
Reusable layouts, brand colours, consistent framing applied across a catalogue — that is an editor’s job, and we don’t do it.
You need a model wearing the product.
Photoroom generates AI fashion models. We generate no people at all, by design — so if the shot needs a person, we are the wrong tool.
Use Phoxel
The background isn’t missing — the scene is.
A cutout on white is a compliance photo. It doesn’t show the product on a marble counter, in a lit kitchen, or on a linen backdrop. Removing pixels can’t add a scene that was never photographed.
You shoot in bursts, not monthly.
A new drop, a seasonal restyle, a listing refresh. A subscription bills you for the months in between; credits sit there until you need them.
You sell more than products.
A dish, a rental, a car, a dog, a ring, a logo on a storefront. Nine other niches, same credits.
You want a set, not a file.
Ten to twenty variations of the same item — angles, surfaces, seasons — generated in one pass, rather than edited one at a time.
The real difference is what the tool starts from.
An editor starts from your photograph and takes things away — the background, a blemish, a colour cast. Everything it can give you was already in the file. That is why background removal has a ceiling: once the product is cleanly cut out, the tool has done all it can, and you still have a product floating on white.
A generator starts from your photograph as a description of the object, and builds a scene around it that was never in the file. That is the whole difference, and it is also the whole risk: the object must survive the trip. Our entire product is the constraint that it does — same shape, same label, same colour, same scratch.
Which means the honest answer to “which one” is: if your photo needs less, use an editor. If it needs more, an editor can’t help.
