Is your background actually white?
Amazon defines the main-image background as RGB 255, 255, 255 exactly, and requires the product to fill 85% of the frame. This measures both from your file, so you find out here rather than after a listing gets suppressed.
What this cannot do: the fill starts at the border, so a gap fully enclosed by the product - inside a mug handle, between the straps of a bag - is never reached and keeps its original colour. Raise the tolerance far enough and a pale product starts reading as background and disappears; the preview shows you when that happens. This is a clean-up, not a cut-out.

How it measures
The background colour is sampled from the outer 4% border of the image - the region a marketplace main image would show as empty space around the product. The tool reports the median of those pixels, which ignores a stray dark corner better than an average would.
Product coverage is the share of pixels that differ from that background colour by more than a small tolerance, which approximates the “product fills 85% of the frame” rule. It’s an estimate: a product that happens to be white on white will read low, and a busy background will read high.
What the verdicts mean
- 255, 255, 255 - pure white, which is what Amazon’s main-image rule specifies.
- 250–254 - near-white. It looks white on your screen, and on Amazon’s own white page it reads as a faint grey panel around the product.
- Below 250, or a colour cast - the backdrop was lit warm or cool and the camera balanced for the product. No amount of brightening fixes the cast without also clipping the product.
Etsy, Shopify and Airbnb publish no background-colour rule at all, so this check only matters where you’re selling into a white-background requirement. See the white background guide for the three ways to actually get there, or the Amazon requirements in full.
