What does the human way actually cost per photo?

Pick the job, put in the price you have been quoted, and this works out the total both ways, finds the cheapest credit-pack combination, and shows where the two lines cross.

Amazon recommends a main image plus six more.
Travel, samples, studio hire, retouching.
The shoebox count, not just the ones you would pick first.
Faithful plus one warmer tone is the usual pair.
Studios advertise $25-$120 a photo; heavy damage is quoted higher.
Most photographer packages return exactly one.
Rate cards cluster at $75-$150 at twenty heads.
Almost always a separate line: $200-$700.
Each one is another visit, at the full setup fee.
Warm for the seller, modern for the reel.
Human virtual staging runs $16-$40 an image.

How the credit side is worked out

Phoxel sells credits in four packs - $6 for 200, $15 for 600, $29 for 1,500 and $49 for 3,000 - and 10 credits are one delivered photo. The calculator solves for the cheapest combination of packs that covers your total, which is usually not simply the biggest pack: at some counts two mid packs beat one large one plus a small.

Failed generations retry for free, so the credit total is what you pay for photos you keep. Credits don’t expire, so leftovers from an over-buy carry into the next batch rather than evaporating.

What it doesn’t count

  • Your time either way - shooting references still takes a few minutes per product.
  • The photographer’s judgement on set, which is worth something a render can’t reproduce.
  • Anything platform-specific: Etsy wants a real photo of the finished item in the first slot regardless of cost.

For the version of this with words rather than sliders - day rates, per-photo studios, DIY, and a plain list of the shots that still need a human - see AI photos vs hiring a photographer.

For a per-marketplace view of what you actually need, see the Amazon, Etsy and Shopify guides.

The four jobs, and where the numbers come from

Every default here is the middle of a band published in one of our cost write-ups, and every one of them is editable, because your quote is the only rate that matters. Product shoots come from the product photography breakdown; restoration from the restoration one; headshots from what a photo day actually costs; staging from the staging comparison.

Two of the modes carry a detail worth naming. Restoration prices versions separately: a studio charges for the repair, not for showing you three tones of it, so the human column counts photos while the credit column counts versions - which is the whole point, since a second attempt at thirty cents is a decision you can make lightly. Team headshots price the new hire: travel and setup is one line across a photo day and the entire bill when one person sits down six weeks later.

The number on the right is the one you can start today.

No booking, no studio day, no reshoot fee. Upload a few phone snaps per product and get the set back in minutes.
